MALACHIANS' 2008 WALK RAISES OVER £3,000 FOR NEPAL
Ian Brown of Sathi Nepali, with some Nepalese kids
On Sunday morning 12th October 2008 Malachians' Committee, friends, wives, children, dogs (and even a few players) turned out for a really wonderful and worthwhile day out, and in the process raised just over £3000 for a charity called Sathi Nepali. Sathi Nepali has been doing some great work in a village called Chimkhola in a remote mountainous region of Western Nepal for the past few years, helping local children get an education and improving their living conditions. Local Cave Hill Road man, Ian Brown, is the Charity's Chairperson and he and and his Nepalese wife, Gita, joined the Mals' volunteers for the walk from the Chester to McArtt's Fort and back. The walk started at the Chester car park at 12.00 noon and ended at the same venue at 2.30pm. After some well deserved the walkers enjoyed a few drinks and a really great afternoon's craic and music, courtesy of The Raiders. Management at the Chester as usual went out of their way to look after everyone and the club is grateful to Gerard, Michelle and Deirdre for their continuing support. Speaking after the walk, Ian Brown, expressed his appreciation to Malachians FC and all those who did the walk or contributed to the magnificent total. He assured everyone that every penny would be spent on the front line in Nepal. Ian also introduced a DVD which showed the vital work done by the Charity working closely with local people in a village named Chimkola. Ian said "Chimkola village in Western Nepal is 2,500 metres above sea level and takes 8 hours to reach on foot. Our work is making a real difference to the lives of local people and particularly the children of the village, and I am a little surprised but delighted with the amount raised by Malachians and their friends. " Malachians' Committee spokesperson, Kevin Shiels, said the club has once again been overwhelmed by the magnificent response from local people and the amount raised. "Malachians relies on a lot of sponsorship every year from local businesses to keep our club afloat and we are all just grateful for the opportunity to do something in return to help such a deserving cause as this. Malachians Football Club would like to say a really big "Thank You" to each and every one who contributed to the event and to all who did the walk."
